Kullu, Himachal, Experiences Massive Landslip, Multiple Homes Collapse
Several houses were demolished today by a major landslip in
Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district. Many multi-story structures collapsed in the
avalanche, creating a vast trail of dust and debris behind.
According to a government report, 224 people have died as a
result of the rain, while an additional 117 have died in weather-related
incidents.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State
Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been dispatched to rescue persons who are
believed to be trapped in the landslip.
The Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD) has issued a red signal for Himachal Pradesh, warning of
impending severe to very heavy rainfall over the next two days beginning today.
"Disturbing images emerge from Anni, Kullu, showing a
massive commercial building collapsing in the midst of a devastating
landslip." "It's worth noting that the administration identified the
threat and successfully evacuated the building two days prior," Himachal
Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu posted on X, previously known as
Twitter.
Sanjay Kundu, a senior Himachal Pradesh police officer, told
NDTV that no lives were lost and that an evacuation campaign was carried out as
a preventive step before to the landslip.
Several sections of the state continued to experience heavy
rainfall, forcing locals to bear the brunt of the extreme weather.
After heavy rain in the area,
hundreds of cars were trapped on the damaged Kullu-Mandi Highway today.
"The road between Mandi and Kullu has been destroyed.
Damage has also been done to a diversion via Pandoh. Therefore, traffic
movement has been temporarily halted, senior Kullu police official Sakshi Verma
said, according to news agency ANI.
In the environmentally delicate hill state, the constant
downpour has wreaked havoc with landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods. The
state administration is attempting to analyse the damage and offer help to
those who have been impacted by the natural tragedy after previously
designating the whole state as "a natural calamity-affected area."
Three significant periods of
very heavy rain during monsoon season have resulted in the closure of 709
highways in all.
The Himachal Pradesh government estimates that since June 24,
when the monsoon arrived in the state, the total damage to public
infrastructure as a result of the continuing rain calamity is $8,014.61 crore.
The extraordinary downpour caused 2,022 dwellings to be
completely damaged and 9,615 to be partially damaged, according to state
government statistics. Additionally, 113 landslides have been reported in the
state, which have uprooted thousands of people and severely damaged
infrastructure.
